2、 this study, we hope to view the issue of negative transfer from a psycholinguistic perspective and bring out the process as to how negative transfer actually takes place in the human mind. The subjects of study in this

3、 thesis are non-English major college students in China. Based on past research on negative transfer and the bilingual mental lexicon, a model of lexical representation and a model of lexical access are proposed respecti

4、vely to illustrate the features of the bilingual mental lexicon for these students. We point out that in both models, Chinese equivalents serve as an indispensable medium both in lexical representation and lexical access

5、. Because of this heavy dependence on Chinese equivalents in their bilingual mental lexicon, many problems of negative transfer can take place in the learning process. To find sufficient supporting evidence for the rela

6、tionship between negative transfer and the bilingual mental lexicon, a case study is carried out. Altogether 100 sample writings are collected from CET4 and CET6 writing. Analysis on these samples proves that the bilingu

7、al mental lexicon does play a role in the negative transfer which occurs frequently in the samples at various linguistic levels. A constant interaction between learners’ bilingual mental lexicon and their existing L2 kno

8、wledge is also noticed from the analysis. The study provides some pedagogical implications as well. Teachers should first of all take a reasonable attitude toward the occurrence of negative transfer since the learners’ d
