2、this thesis has made a tentative study on translation from a pragmatic perspective. Verschueren proposes a pragmatic perspective of adaptation and he assumes that language use is a continuous making of linguistic choices

3、. Actually, much translation work and research has been done from the perspective of contextual adaptation. With the development of adaptation theory, more and more works on translation are approaching this issue. The t

4、hesis attempts to apply Verschueren’s adaptation theory in the context to the study of two Chinese versions of Thoreau’s Walden. Meanwhile, it mainly focuses on contextual correlates of adaptation theory and attempts to

5、apply this aspect to guide translation. The adaptation theory includes contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamitic of adaptability, salience of the adaptability. Contextual correl

6、ates of adaptability are the main topic of this thesis. Actually, contextual adaptation refers to mental world, social world, and physical world. Thus, this thesis attempts to use three aspects to analyze the two version

7、s connecting with language, culture and figure of speech. Through comparison and analyze, it turns out that translation ought to be constantly modified to make it adapt to different contexts. Adaptation theory provides u
